๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Developer DevLog: Fixing Common Unity WebGL Errors (Itch.io & Vercel)

Deploying Unity WebGL games to web hosts like Itch.io, Vercel, or custom static servers often results in cryptic errors. During the deployment of Snake Zenzia, I encountered and diagnosed three classic Unity WebGL bugs. Here is how to fix them:

1. "Unable to parse Build/*.framework.js.gz! Content-Encoding: gzip" Error

Unity WebGL Content-Encoding gzip error on Vercel

๐Ÿ” The Cause:

This error appears when Unity builds the game with Gzip or Brotli compression enabled, but the static web server (such as Vercel, Netlify, or standard Nginx) serves the compressed .js.gz or .wasm.gz file without adding the HTTP response header:

Content-Encoding: gzip

Without this header, the browser cannot decompress the file natively before passing it to the JavaScript engine, causing parsing to fail immediately.

2. "abort('both async and sync fetching of the wasm failed')" & net::ERR_CONNECTION_RESET

Unity WebGL both async and sync fetching of the wasm failed error popup on Itch.io

DevTools console showing net ERR_CONNECTION_RESET for wasm file

๐Ÿ” The Cause:

When loading the WebAssembly (.wasm) binary, the browser console logs:

Failed to load resource: net::ERR_CONNECTION_RESET html.itch.zone/.../SnakeFinal.wasm
both async and sync fetching of the wasm failed

This is caused by two common issues:

  1. Uncompressed or Oversized WASM Files: If compression was set to Disabled, the raw .wasm file is huge (often 50MB+). On cellular data (mobile 4G/5G) or slower networks, the connection resets or times out mid-transfer.
  2. Corrupted Browser Cache: If the initial download attempt is interrupted, modern browsers (Chrome/Edge) cache the incomplete, corrupted chunk. Reloading standard tabs continues to fail until cache is cleared or opened in Incognito mode.

3. The Definitive Fix in Unity Player Settings

The cleanest, server-independent solution is configuring Unity's WebGL Publishing Settings properly before building:

Unity WebGL Publishing Settings: Gzip compression and Decompression Fallback enabled

โš™๏ธ Step-by-Step Settings:

  1. In Unity, open Edit โ†’ Project Settings โ†’ Player.
  2. Select the WebGL tab (globe icon).
  3. Expand Publishing Settings:
    • Compression Format: Set to Gzip (compresses files down to a fraction of their original size, preventing ERR_CONNECTION_RESET on mobile connections).
    • Decompression Fallback: Check this box [โœ“] (This injects a lightweight JavaScript fallback decompressor. If the server does not support Content-Encoding: gzip headers, the browser decompresses the files client-side automatically).
  4. Rebuild the project and re-upload the .zip to Itch.io / Vercel.
  5. If testing on a previously failed browser session, test in an Incognito / Private Window or clear the cache to ensure no broken .wasm chunks remain.

๐ŸŒŸ Game Highlights

  • Classic Nostalgia, Modern Graphics: The spiritual 3D successor to the timeless Nokia Snake Xenzia.
  • Instant Browser Play: Powered by lightweight Unity WebGL with client-side decompression fallback for 60 FPS performance.
  • Cross-Device Ready: Full support for desktop keyboard inputs, standalone Windows PC, and mobile touch navigation.
  • 100% Free to Play: Instant arcade action with zero paywalls.
